About Protect PDF
Protect PDF applies a password so only people who receive the passphrase can open the file. Consultants send pricing under NDA, HR shares salary spreadsheets converted to PDF, and individuals email tax drafts knowing casual forwarders cannot read them. Password protection is a practical barrier for casual misuse, though determined attackers with tooling may still attempt recovery on weak passwords—use long, unique passwords and share them through a separate channel.
This tool encrypts at the PDF level, which is different from folder encryption on your laptop or full-disk encryption on a phone. It is ideal when email itself is considered semi-public but the attachment should not be. Combine with Watermark PDF when you also want visible “confidential” labeling.
Upload limits apply; extremely large files may need Compress PDF first if quality tradeoffs are acceptable. After protection, test opening the PDF in another reader to confirm the password works before deleting the unprotected original—keep a secure backup strategy.
Passwords are easy to forget; document them in an approved secrets manager, not sticky notes. For regulated data, follow your legal team’s guidance on whether cloud-based protection meets policy. Pair with Merge PDF when building a protected packet from multiple sources.
